How to setup an Apple device for donation
Getting your iPhone ready for a new owner requires careful removal of your personal information so the device is prepared for a fresh setup. Follow these steps:
1. Back Up Your iPhone (Optional, for data retention):
iCloud: Navigate to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, then select "Back Up Now."
Computer (Finder/iTunes): Connect your iPhone to your computer. On a Mac, open Finder; on Windows, use iTunes or the Apple Devices app. Choose your iPhone and opt to back up to your computer.
2. Turn off "Find My Device."
3. Unpair Apple Watch (if applicable):
Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
Go to the "My Watch" tab, tap "All Watches," then the "i" icon next to your watch.
Tap "Unpair Apple Watch."
4. Sign Out of iCloud, iTunes & App Store:
Go to Settings > [your name].
Scroll down and tap "Sign Out."
Provide your Apple ID password when prompted, then tap "Turn Off."
5. Deregister iMessage and FaceTime (if switching to a non-Apple phone):
If the new user won't have an iPhone, deregister iMessage to prevent messaging issues.
In Settings, go to Messages and turn off iMessage.
In Settings, go to FaceTime and turn off FaceTime.
6. Erase All Content and Settings (Factory Reset):
This crucial step completely wipes your iPhone and restores it to factory settings.
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
You might need to enter your passcode or Apple ID password.
If your device has an eSIM, you'll be prompted to erase or keep the profile. Choose to erase it for the new user.
Confirm the device erasure.
7. Remove from Trusted Devices (Optional, but Recommended):
After erasing, further disconnect the iPhone from your account.
Visit appleid.apple.com in a web browser.
Sign in with your Apple ID.
In the "Devices" section, select your old iPhone and click "Remove from Account."
By following these procedures, your iPhone will be thoroughly cleared of your personal data, ready for a new user to set up as if it were brand new.
